JOHN ANDERSON | DRAWING
I explore the first hand experience of visual perception. My focus is the threshold between seeing and recognizing. In the experience of sight we seek out the familiar. We search for patterns. But before we recognize a thing, we are at a holding point, a place of mystery or ambiguity. I attempt to reveal that place in these images. In this set of images I’m deliberately using tactile methods and mediums, namely deep charcoals on heavily textured surfaces. I create form and depth with an obvious hands-on approach. I let the texture of the surface media push back to constrain and shape. That first aspect of perception which is about discovery often involves touching. When we’re in dark or unknown territory, we have to feel our way.

WHITNEY ANDERSON | PAINTING, DRAWING, COLLAGE
I am a self-taught fine artist practicing in the mediums of hand cutout collage the past 2 years, acrylic painting the past 15 years and drawing since I was 3 years old. I specialize in portraiture and iconic subject matter. I believe what makes me a successful artist is often a paradox of mindsets: whimsical and free of thinking with my ideas yet disciplined and commanding to execute those ideas. I spend countless hours on my art—from conception to completion my mind is always calculating the next move to bring everything I visualize to life. My creative mission is to consistently move towards new challenging work: I believe that is what enthralls the viewer to see beyond the art and into my soul as it in turn touches their own.
